How would you find a job in NYC?

I've been accepted into NYU and as part of deal with my parents, I have to provide for myself in that glorious little city. These terms have made me start reconsidering my decision to go to NYU. so I have to ask, how do you find a job there? I'm currently in Chicago, so obviously I can't go do interviews. =/. Also, how much do you guys think is spent on personal things in an average year? Thank you very much.
